The Joseph blessings: The blessings of the breast and of the womb

Last week, we looked at how Israel blessed Joseph and who the beneficiaries of the blessings are. The blessings include these:

By the God of your father who will help you, And by the Almighty who will bless you With blessings of heaven above, Blessings of the deep that lies beneath, Blessings of the breasts and of the womb. (Genesis 49:25 NKJV)

We also saw who the beneficiaries of these blessings really are: You and I in Christ.
Today we shall be looking into the blessings of the breast and of the womb which are the spiritual aspect of the blessings.

The Blessings of the breast and of the womb.
Before we look into the blessings of the breast, we need to understand what the breast signifies. The breast signifies repentance many times in the bible and here are some instances:

And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ (Luke 18:13 NKJV)

And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. (Luke 23:48 NKJV)

The act of beating the breast was an act of remorse and repentance and so when we receive the blessings of the breast, we receive the blessings of repentance.
Repentance is a blessing and is the foundation for all other blessings we can receive from God. Repentance for us means changing our mindsets about Jesus Christ and believing in him as the Son of God who died to take our sins away, then confessing Him as our Lord and Saviour. Repentance doesn’t come about through human effort but is achieved by the work of God’s Spirit. Jesus said this:

And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.” (John 6:65 NKJV)

The blessings of the breast (repentance) which is the foundation for all other blessings also allows God to teach you knowledge and give you understanding about his message.

“Whom will he teach knowledge? And whom will he make to understand the message? Those just weaned from milk? Those just drawn from the breasts? (Isaiah 28:9 NKJV)

The blessings of the womb signifies God’s choosing. God has chosen us to come to repentance in Christ and be partakers of all his other blessings. Many times, the bible talks about God choosing people from the womb even before they are born. Here is an instance:

Thus says the Lord who made you And formed you from the womb, who will help you: ‘Fear not, O Jacob My servant; And you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen. For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, And floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, And My blessing on your offspring; They will spring up among the grass Like willows by the watercourses.’ (Isaiah 44:2-4 NKJV)

The blessings of the breast and of the womb are the blessings of spiritual new-birth. God has chosen us to come to repentance and to be redeemed and sanctified in Christ. He has also chosen us to enjoy all the blessings available in Christ because He loves us. So let us always have the mindset that:

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; (I Peter 2:9 NKJV)

We shall further analyse the blessings of Joseph next week and look into the physical aspects which are the blessings of heaven above and of the deep that lies beneath.
Hope to see you then
